Michael and I celebrated our first anniversary yesterday by spending the day together on an island that’s about 20 miles off of the Mississippi Gulf Coast and eating BBQ at The Shed, which serves the best BBQ around.
This morning we spent time in the coffee shop where we had our first date. We ate breakfast, spent time reading the Bible and praying together, and each of us studied the material for the small groups we’re leading during the summer. Michael’s Freedom group for men started earlier this evening, and I’m co-leading a group for ladies later this week. Freedom is, hands down, the most transformative, life-changing bible study we’ve ever completed, and I’m so excited that there are guys in the living room walking through it together right now. My girlfriends and I are studying the book, Becoming Myself by Stasi Eldredge, and we’re both excited to see what God’s going to do in the lives of the people in our groups. We dream of being used for his purpose, and we spent some time today reflecting on the practical ways that God is using us now. It’s such a privilege to know that as imperfect as we are we’re redeemed by the blood of Christ, and he loves us so much.
At breakfast, we talked about the changes that have occurred in our hearts and lives since we first sat down together at the coffee shop, and we also discussed how we want God to work in our lives in specific areas that we’re still working to surrender to Him. We both have different jobs than we did when we got married, we live in a bigger home in our favorite part of town, our group of friends is the same – just expanding, we have a different church home that is committed to reaching people throughout this city and beyond, we’re on the same page when it comes to money and the role that we believe the Lord plays in it, and there’s so much more.
This evening, prior to Michael’s bible study, we went to Ruth’s Chris to close out our anniversary weekend, and we had a great time. I’m so thankful for the first year of marriage that Michael and I shared, and I’m even more grateful that we are walking into the new year on the same page, desiring the same core things, and working together to be the couple that God created us to be.
We pray together at least once every day, and we’re determined to continue growing in our faith individually and together. I’m so excited to see what the next year brings, and I’m thankful that God is in control of all of it.
You can go to bed without fear, you will lie down and sleep soundly.
You need not be afraid of sudden disaster or the destruction that comes upon the wicked,
for the Lord is your security.
He will keep your foot from being caught in a trap.
Sometimes it’s hard to wrap my head around God’s goodness and that he would choose to be so faithful to me – a sinner who needed him to come in and change every aspect of my life. It’s hard to imagine, but I’ll never stop being thankful for that.
